An electric pallet truck sat in the corner out of service can have a detrimental effect on your bottom line. It significantly slows down deliveries as you are left scratching the surface for a spare truck or forced into using a manual pump truck. This increases the risk of your driver injuring themselves.
It’s therefore vital you can maximise the life expectancy of your electric pallet truck. We’ve put some easy tips together to make sure your Electric Pallet Truck is kept up and running around the clock, ensuring to make those valuable deliveries are met.
1. Lithium-Ion Battery Technology
Lithium-ion battery technology has been popular choice in recent years as it brings about many advantages to your operations.
Lithium-Ion enables you to opportunistic charge the battery in short sharp bursts without damaging it (e.g. lunch breaks). This gives you greater availability of the truck. To ensure maximum life of the battery it’s better to not leave it on charge overnight on a regular basis.
Also, compared with a traditional Gel battery, Lithium-ion technology ensures a longer lasting life expectancy. For example, the HC CBD15-JL3 battery boasts 2,00 life cycles, ensuring longevity.
2. Anderson Plug Connector
An Anderson plug connector facilitates a quick, easy and secure electrical connection between the battery and the truck. This safety feature reduces the risk of damaging a battery by creating the “contact force” that provides extremely low resistance enabling greater electrical efficiency.
Most pallet truck manufacturers have pins located at the bottom of the battery and charger. If the operator was to put them in the wrong way around (we’re all human after all!) the pins can break and you’re looking at an unwanted bill for a new battery.
Our new CBD15-JL3 Electric pallet truck has a built in Anderson plug connector which reduces the risk of your battery breaking and the life costs of your pallet truck.
3. Avoid Extreme Weather
Breaking News: Electrics and water don’t mix!
Using your electric pallet truck outside is fine most of the time. However, originally designed for the warehouse it’s important to remember that they are not 100% waterproof and leaving them out in the rain for long periods of time will increase the risk of damaging the truck in the long run.
It’s Important to check the Ingress Protection (IP) rating of your pallet truck. This indicates how well the truck is protected again solid and water. The HC CBD15-JL3’s Electric Pallet Truck for example has an IP54 water resistance rating. A shell type chassis ensures electrical components have a certain water resistance when exposed to the elements. However, they are not designed to be used in a thunderstorm for a long duration, so common sense prevails sometimes.
TOP TIP – water repellent sprays can be applied to areas where water is likely to get into the electrics such as switches and control units.
4. Service Truck Regularly
Regular pallet truck service intervals pay dividends – it’s certainly a good habit to get into.
Naturally over time parts such as load wheels, castor wheels and brackets move and rub against each other over time. If this is not monitored closely, the problem will only get worse until the truck eventually fails. This can often lead to the truck having to be replaced because the repairs and parts are more expensive than the cost of a new truck. This is bad news for bottom line, productivity and the green party.
There is a however simple solution! A regularly serviced pallet truck will reduce downtime, ensuring it’s safe to use and reduces the risk of a write off. Get in touch to discuss our preventable maintenance programmes alleviate any long-term problems or downtime occurring.
